Tornado Preparedness & Safety Tips!

Tornado Preparedness & Safety Tips!
Create a Tornado Emergency Plan with the people you live with. Roomies, Friends or family. AND Communicate the DANG Plan!
  • Practice moving quickly to your protective location. conduct your tornado drill & get an idea on how much time it takes to reach your destination.
  • Secure important documents. Keep all important documents, such as legal papers, birth certificates, marriage license, financial papers and insurance policy information in a safety deposit box or fireproof/waterproof box.
  • Communicate with family members. In case you are not together when a tornado watch or tornado warning is issued, have a plan on how to reach each other. Texts are faster than phone calls and keeping important numbers stored in your wallet is essential.

Sheltering in Place during a Tornado:

  • Once you receive an alert that a tornado is approaching, there will be little time to act. If sheltering during high winds, go to your planned safe room, storm shelter, or a small, interior, windowless room or hallway on the lowest floor.
  • If you are in a moving vehicle, try to take shelter in a sturdy building.
  • Do not park your car under an overpass or bridge (suction guys…no bueno), or try to “beat” the storm.
  • If you cannot leave your car, you can stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on, lower your head down below your windows and protect your head with your hands.
  • Or, find a spot lower than the level of the roadway, such as a ditch, get outta your car and lie down in that.

After the storm has passed, continue to use extreme caution!

Side Note: We know tornadoes are terribly unpredictable, but we hope these tips do help y'all!!! Stay Safe out there!!!
